Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his comments on Nigeria’s privatisation programme, describing them as a reflection of “desperation” and a disregard for history.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said Tinubu’s remarks reveal “a troubling pattern of hypocrisy and historical amnesia.”
The response followed Tinubu’s criticism of Atiku’s role in past privatisation efforts and his allegation that the former vice-president was attempting to privatise the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Shaibu said the President’s position contradicts policies currently being pursued by his administration, noting that Atiku had consistently supported the privatisation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the sale of refineries to private investors.
He alleged that similar policies are now being implemented without transparency or accountability.
“This is not reform; it is privatisation without accountability,” the statement said.

Atiku Criticises Tinubu For Economic Hardship
Shaibu also faulted Tinubu’s comments as dismissive of documented history, insisting that Atiku’s record in public service remains verifiable.
He criticised the current economic situation, saying many Nigerians are facing rising living costs, business closures and shrinking incomes.
According to him, the administration’s reforms have yet to deliver relief for citizens.
“What has been presented as reform has translated into hardship,” he said.
Shaibu added that Atiku’s record remains “clear and defensible,” urging the President to focus on governance rather than personal attacks as political tensions build ahead of the 2027 elections.
