Focus on Constructive Assistance, Not Provocative Statements, Kwankwaso Tells Trump

Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has urged United States President Donald Trump to support Nigeria with technological resources in tackling insecurity instead of issuing military threats.

Kwankwaso made the appeal in a statement on Sunday while reacting to President Trump’s recent comments accusing the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to attacks on Christians and threatening possible U.S. military intervention against terrorist groups operating in Nigeria.

Trump’s warning followed an allegation of “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

In his response, Kwankwaso said Nigeria remains a sovereign nation grappling with complex security challenges that affect people of all religions and ethnicities.

“It is important to emphasise that our country is a sovereign nation whose people face different threats from outlaws across the country. The insecurity we face does not distinguish based on religious, ethnic, or political beliefs,” he said.

The former Minister of Defence called on the U.S. government to focus its efforts on constructive assistance rather than provocative statements.

“The United States should assist the Nigerian authorities with better cutting-edge technology to tackle these problems, rather than posing a threat that could further polarise our country,” Kwankwaso stated.

Kwankwaso Advises Tinubu to Strengthen Diplomatic Engagement

He also advised the Federal Government to strengthen diplomatic engagement with Washington by appointing seasoned envoys and ambassadors to protect Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.

“The Nigerian government should consider appointing special envoys from its distinguished diplomats to engage the American government. Additionally, it is necessary to appoint permanent ambassadors to represent Nigeria’s interests on the international stage,” he added.

Kwankwaso further appealed for unity among Nigerians amid rising international tensions, urging citizens to prioritise nationhood over division.

“This is a moment to emphasise unity of belonging over division. God bless Nigeria,” he said.

The NNPP leader’s remarks come amid escalating diplomatic exchanges following President Trump’s controversial statement on alleged religious persecution in Nigeria.
