The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams, expanded from the usual 32, with matches hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

This expansion is designed to increase global participation and revenue, offering more countries the chance to compete on football’s biggest stage. The total prize fund represents a significant increase from the 2018 World Cup, where the total payout was $400 million, reflecting FIFA’s growing commercial success and sponsorship deals.

The new prize structure aims to reward performance while supporting all participating nations, ensuring even teams that exit early receive funds to cover travel, training, and other logistical expenses.
