The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State has explained why it is urging prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and others, to formally register at the ward level.
George Ashiru, Chairman of the ADC in Lagos, said the party is moving into a “new phase,” making it necessary for these high-profile figures to formally affiliate with the party.
Following a closed-door meeting with its stakeholders, the ADC leadership directed its top members to resign from their current parties and complete registration as party members.
Top Politicians Yet to Formalize Membership
Ashiru noted that while some opposition figures have left their previous parties, they have yet to officially join the ADC. Others being linked to the party have not yet resigned from their existing political affiliations.

Speaking on News Central’s programme, The 12 Report, Ashiru said, “The coalition, in the first place, was created by the same political stakeholders in Nigeria.
They came together and adopted our party as the platform for a credible alternative coalition.
“So basically, what they’re saying now is that it’s time to move into the next phase: let all the political bigwigs formally register in their respective wards and states, rather than just serving as coalition leaders.
“They need to become actual members of the party in a formal sense.
“That’s the natural progression , starting with coalition discussions, mobilization, and bringing people together, and then moving to registration. This announcement signifies that it’s time to begin that next phase.
“It’s very interesting, the ADC and the coalition have prominently featured in this process. But isn’t that how every political party begins?
“Some may say, ‘I’m coming in six months’ or ‘I’ll join in three or four months.’ We are focusing on the big names, those with wide recognition and influence,” he said.
