‘A Fight You Can’t Win, Don’t Start It,’ Wike Warns Makinde Over PDP Crisis

As the crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has mocked Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, accusing him of starting a fight he cannot win.

Wike made the comments on Monday during the national executive committee (NWC) meeting of the PDP faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

The PDP has been in turmoil following an Appeal Court ruling that nullified the party’s national convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, which had elected Kabiru Turaki as chairman. Party stakeholders have been calling for reconciliation between the factions to ensure the party can field candidates for the 2027 elections.

Makinde Accuses Wike Camp of Supporting Tinubu

On Sunday, Makinde, who is aligned with Turaki’s faction, said engaging with Wike’s camp amounts to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.

“We need Nigerians to judge. If you can be in their camp, where they promised to support the president, so be it. We are not begrudging them. You can support whoever you like to support. But go to them if you want to support them. That is our position,” Makinde said. “They have the government behind them. They have the judiciary behind them. They have INEC behind them. But we have the people behind us.”

Wike, however, accused Makinde of picking a fight he cannot win and of worsening tensions within the party despite lacking the necessary political leverage.

“A fight you can’t fight, don’t start it,” Wike warned.

Meanwhile, Mohammed confirmed that the national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 will go ahead as planned, dismissing reports that Makinde’s faction intended to block it. He also urged party members to remain disciplined and united, emphasising the PDP’s role as a credible opposition.
