Court Schedules Coroner’s Inquest into Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son

The Lagos State Judiciary has set April 14, 2026, for a coroner’s inquest into the death of Nkanu, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Nkanu passed away on January 7, 2026, following complications linked to preparatory medical procedures. The family subsequently issued a legal notice against the hospital, alleging that medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to the child’s death.

Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji of the Yaba Magistrate Court fixed the inquest date after all parties formally announced their representation. Kemi Pinheiro represented the Adichie family, while Adebola Rahman appeared for the Lagos State Attorney-General. Legal teams for Atlantis Hospital and Euracare were also present.

Magistrate Adetunji stated the inquest was initiated at the request of the Attorney-General to ensure a thorough investigation, noting that the Lagos State Government shares in the bereavement. “It is not just the family of the deceased that is affected,” she said.

The court directed all parties to file and exchange witness statements ahead of the hearing. The proceedings aim to determine the exact cause of Nkanu’s death, beginning with the autopsy findings.

The Adichie family intends to present evidence suggesting gross medical negligence, including alleged overdose, wrongful prescription, improper administration of propofol, and misdiagnosis. Five independent medical experts and the child’s father, who is a medical doctor, are expected to testify.

Euracare will open its case when the inquest begins, followed by the Adichie family and then Atlantis Hospital. The matter was adjourned to April 14 for the formal commencement of proceedings.
