The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered all Commissioners of Police to conduct an immediate and comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition across their commands as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and operational efficiency.
Disu said the audit must be thorough, transparent, properly documented, and submitted to Force Headquarters within a stipulated timeframe, stressing that the exercise is critical to preventing misuse and ensuring all police assets are effectively deployed.
“This is not a routine administrative task, but a critical measure to enhance our readiness and ensure proper accountability,” he said.
The IGP reminded Commissioners of their leadership responsibilities, urging them to operate with integrity, discipline, and a people-focused approach.

He also directed CPs to deepen community policing by holding regular town hall meetings with traditional rulers, religious leaders, market groups, youth organisations, women’s associations, and transport unions to build trust and cooperation.
In a move to improve accessibility, Disu ordered Commissioners to make their contact details available to community leaders, saying open communication is key to effective policing.
He noted that security is a collective responsibility and cannot be achieved by the police alone, adding that public trust and partnership are essential.
The IGP further disclosed ongoing retraining of officers, with emphasis on human rights, lawful use of force, and professionalism, while reaffirming that the Police Complaints Response Unit remains operational round the clock for citizens to report misconduct.
He acknowledged concerns over circulating videos of police misconduct, noting that some incidents had been addressed, and assured Nigerians of continued efforts to rebuild public confidence in the force.
