ICPC Recovers N271bn, Tracks 1,440 Govt Projects in Northern Nigeria

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has tracked at least 1,440 government-funded projects worth over N271 billion across Northern Nigeria under its constituency and executive project tracking initiative.

ICPC Chairman, Musa Aliyu, SAN, disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing in Kano, revealing that 767 projects in the North-West were valued at N112 billion, while 673 projects in the North-East accounted for a larger share of N158 billion.

“Our tracking exercise is yielding tangible results. We have not only monitored the implementation of these projects but also recovered significant amounts in both cash and assets,” Aliyu stated.

According to him, the commission recovered N7.269 billion in cash and $1.066 million in foreign currency from the North-West. In the North-East, N43.335 million was retrieved.

The agency also seized 14 buildings, 25 plots of land, and three farmlands in the North-West.

The ICPC chairman lauded the media for exposing abandoned and poorly executed intervention projects, stressing that public scrutiny was crucial in ensuring accountability.

On enforcement, the Commission revealed it had investigated 171 cases within the period – 117 from the North-West and 54 from the North-East. These probes resulted in 16 court cases and eight convictions.

“These figures are not just numbers; they represent our sustained efforts to curb corruption and enforce transparency in public service delivery,” Aliyu added.
