Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Afegbua Rashid, has directed the commanders of Ikom and Obubra Area Commands to dislodge restive youths who have taken over the Ikom–Obubra federal highway.
The order followed violent clashes between youths in Alesi and Obubra communities in Cross River Central, which escalated in the past week.
The youths reportedly intercepted a Hilux truck transporting cocoa from Iyamitet in Obubra to Ikom, offloaded 22 bags of cocoa, and set the vehicle ablaze.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Calabar, Igri Ewa, confirmed the incident, adding that normalcy was restored when the CP visited the scene. “The CP has mandated the two area commanders to clear the highway and stem the violence,” he said.
The hostility began on Monday after a young man from Obubra was killed in Etara, and his headless body was displayed. The killing has since fuelled heightened tensions along the Obubra–Ikom axis.

Igri further disclosed that the CP met with security stakeholders and community leaders in Ogoja and Ikom during his familiarisation tour. The CP also cautioned Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders to take full responsibility for security in their jurisdictions.
