Eko DisCo Declares 25-Day Blackout for Power Line Upgrade

Residents under the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) should brace for 25 days of planned power outages as the company begins major maintenance works in collaboration with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In an official notice posted Friday via its X account, EKEDC said the blackout will run daily from July 28 to August 21, 2025, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The company explained that the power disruption is necessary to allow the TCN to carry out critical upgrades on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330 kV transmission line, a key backbone of the Lagos power supply infrastructure.

“The outage will affect several parts of Lagos and other serviced areas. Residents should expect intermittent electricity and load shedding across our network during this period,” EKEDC stated.

The maintenance work is expected to impact homes and businesses during daytime hours, especially in parts of Surulere, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, and Apapa, although EKEDC is yet to release the full list of affected areas.

While the company described the planned outage as essential for long-term grid stability, many residents may face intensified energy disruptions during an already challenging power season.

As Nigeria continues its push to modernise its power grid, this extended blackout underscores the infrastructure gaps that still plague urban electricity delivery and the growing urgency to close them.
