The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has said Wednesday’s National grid collapse was caused by a system disturbance resulting from the tripping of a Generation company.
Pinnacle Daily reported that the national grid collapsed on Wednesday, resulting in a significant loss of power supply from distribution companies across the country.
From about 4,500 megawatts, data obtained from the NISO portal showed it dropped to 120MW as of Wednesday afternoon, causing blackout in major cities across the country, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano.
In a statement released on Wednesday, as sighted by Pinnacle Daily, NISO said the tripping incident resulted in a significant load drop that cascaded to other Generation companies, leading to a system disturbance.

“Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) informs the general public that the national grid experienced a system disturbance at 11:20 hrs on 10/09/2025.
“The disturbance was caused by the tripping of a GenCo, resulting in a significant load drop, which cascaded to other GenCos, leading to a system disturbance,” NISO stated.
It, however, did not mention the GenCO, but stated that it had begun a comprehensive investigation to determine the root cause of the collapse.
NISO assured that the process to restore the grid had commenced.
“NISO immediately commenced restoration of the grid at 11:45 hrs, beginning with supply to Abuja from the Shiroro power plant, and substantial Restoration has been achieved across the country,” it further stated.
