International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva today announced her intention to appoint Nigel Chalk as Director of the Fund’s Western Hemisphere Department (WHD). Mr Chalk will assume his new role effective October 27, 2025.
A UK and Irish national, Mr Chalk brings to the role nearly three decades of experience at the Fund. Deep institutional knowledge, strategic insight, and calm leadership have earned him widespread respect across the institution.
“Nigel’s deep experience, sound judgement, and steady hand have guided many of us through complex challenges,” said Ms Georgieva. “I am delighted that he will now bring these qualities to the role of director.”
Since 2014, Mr Chalk has served as Deputy Director of WHD, overseeing surveillance and lending operations for key economies including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, and Suriname.
During this time, he has served as Acting Director and as Mission Chief for the United States, leading eleven consecutive Article IV consultations across four different administrations.
Mr Chalk also brings valuable private sector experience. From 2012 to 2013, he was Managing Director and Head of Non-Japan Asia Research at Barclays Bank in Singapore, where he co-led global research and represented the firm’s Asia insights to clients. This role enriched his understanding of the intersection between the fund’s work and global capital markets.
Mr Chalk holds a B.A. from the University of Liverpool, an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, and both a Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has taught at UCLA and Rutgers University and published extensively on fiscal and monetary policy and financial reform.
