A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has scheduled March 28 and 29 for its national convention to elect new members of the party’s national working committee (NWC).

The decision was taken on Monday at a national executive committee (NEC) meeting of the faction held in Abuja.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the NEC welcomed the ruling of the Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, which nullified the PDP’s national convention held on November 15.

The party expressed “absolute confidence” in the judiciary, describing the judgement as a demonstration of the rule of law and judicial independence.

According to the communiqué, ward and local government congresses will be conducted in February, followed by state congresses ahead of the national convention scheduled to be held in Abuja in March.

The NEC also approved the extension of the tenure of the national caretaker working committee (NCWC), chaired by Abdulrahman Muhammed, as well as other caretaker committees at the zonal and state levels, pending the conclusion of the congresses.

The committee urged party members at all levels to remain united, disciplined and loyal, while avoiding actions capable of undermining cohesion within the party.

The communiqué reaffirmed the faction’s commitment to rebuilding a disciplined, democratic and electorally competitive PDP capable of providing credible leadership to Nigerians.

Background

In November 2025, another faction of the PDP, backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, held a parallel national convention in Ibadan, where Kabiru Turaki emerged as national chairman.

That convention followed a series of conflicting court rulings, including judgements from federal high courts in Abuja restraining the exercise over alleged violations of the party’s constitution and electoral laws.

However, a high court in Ibadan cleared the convention to proceed and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor it.

The Wike-backed faction opposed the convention and subsequently constituted parallel party organs, including an NWC, board of trustees and NEC.

In December, INEC declined to recognise the Turaki-led NWC, citing multiple court judgements on the matter.
