Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, says he would advocate a pardon for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if the separatist leader demonstrates genuine remorse.
Gumi made the remark on Tuesday during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television breakfast programme.
His comments come a week after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on seven terrorism-related charges.
The IPOB leader has since been moved to Sokoto Prison.

“If Nnamdi Kanu, who is in prison for terrorism and threatening to kill our soldiers, shows remorse and calls for peace, I will be at the forefront calling for his pardon and amnesty,” Gumi said.
The cleric, who has in recent years positioned himself as a mediator in various national security issues, added that peace efforts require sincerity and a willingness to de-escalate tensions from all sides.
