Cameroon Awaits Results Amid High Tension and Rival Victory Claims

Cameroon remains on edge as citizens await the official results of the October 12 presidential election.

The Constitutional Council announced that the final results will be released on Thursday, October 23.

The delay has fueled anxiety across the country, with both leading candidates claiming victory.

Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma, of the Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC), told supporters that he possesses polling station reports showing he won by a wide margin.

He also called on Cameroon’s neighboring countries, particularly Nigeria and Chad, as well as the African Union, European Union, United Nations, France, the United States, and other international partners, not to remain silent. He insisted that their voices could play a crucial role in safeguarding peace in Cameroon.

Meanwhile, the National Vote Counting Commission continues to verify and compile tallies from across the regions.

Tchiroma Appeals For Peace And Integrity

In an address to his supporters on Monday, Issa Tchiroma urged outgoing President Paul Biya, who has ruled for 43 years, to “respect the will of the people” and step down with dignity. He warned that any attempt to manipulate the outcome could tarnish Biya’s legacy and end his rule in disgrace.

Tchiroma also called on Nigeria, Chad, and international organizations such as the African Union, European Union, United Nations, France, and the United States to monitor the situation closely.

According to him, their intervention could prevent unrest and protect democracy in Cameroon.

A Nation On Edge

Across major cities, security has been tightened as supporters of both the ruling party and the opposition hold rival rallies.

Reports from Garoua and Yaoundé indicate that police have been deployed near government buildings and opposition offices to prevent clashes.

Many Cameroonians say they are frustrated by decades of political stagnation and are eager for change after Biya’s long rule.

Regional And Global Concerns mount as diplomatic observers warn that Cameroon’s crisis could destabilize parts of Central Africa if tensions escalate.

Neighboring countries have expressed concern over possible refugee movements in the event of violence.

International partners are urging calm and calling for transparency in the vote tallying process.
