Ohanaeze PG Urges Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu

President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to order the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, insisting there is no longer any justification for his continued detention.
Azuta-Mbata made the call in a video message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. He stressed that Kanu urgently requires medical attention and that keeping him in custody without access to proper healthcare puts his life at risk.
“The government must ensure his safety and welfare, and allow him to go for medical treatment as quickly as possible. I do not believe the government has any serious advantage in keeping him any further,” the Ohanaeze leader stated.
He further urged the federal government to adopt a political solution to the matter, rather than prolonging Kanu’s detention, which he described as unnecessary.

In the same message, Azuta-Mbata also appealed to Igbos across Nigeria to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise. “I’m calling upon Ndigbos, and Igbos in general, wherever you are in Nigeria, to quickly go and get your voter cards,” he said.
The appeal comes amid rising concerns about Kanu’s deteriorating health. Several groups and individuals have recently called on the federal government to either release him on health grounds or transfer him to a better medical facility for adequate treatment.
Kanu, who has been in custody since his re-arrest in 2021, is facing charges bordering on terrorism, incitement, and other alleged offences brought by the federal government
