Labour warns RMAFC’s proposal could worsen inequality and spark outrage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate publication of the current earnings of political office holders and the criteria for any planned review. The demand follows rumours of an upward adjustment by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

In a statement on Sunday, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, dismissed the proposal as “insensitive, unjust, inequitable, and a direct threat to social stability.” He warned that raising politicians’ pay at a time of economic hardship would only “deepen poverty and widen inequality.”

Civil Servants Left Behind
The labour body highlighted that civil servants’ last wage review was less than 50 percent, while political office holders had enjoyed increments exceeding 800 percent. It noted that while civil servants’ salaries are tied to resource availability, politicians enjoy uniform pay structures nationwide regardless of states’ fiscal strength.

The NLC urged RMAFC to suspend the planned review immediately, warning that treating public office as a wealth pathway would heighten desperation for political positions, threatening governance and national stability.
