The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled the former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and imposed a 30-year ban on him from participating in any activity related to the party.
The decision was announced on Sunday by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which said the action was taken in line with the SDP’s constitution, manifesto, and guiding principles. The NWC also cited provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act, which grant political parties the exclusive right to determine their membership.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP warned its members against any form of association with El-Rufai or individuals deemed not to represent the interests of the party.
“El-Rufai is hereby banished and banned from applying for membership, identifying with the name, insignia, logo, symbol, mark, or any activities, organs, agencies, and institutions of the SDP,” the statement read. “He is also prohibited from donating to, supporting, contributing to, or participating in any affairs of the SDP for a period of 30 years effective from today.”
El-Rufai, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), joined the SDP after leaving the ruling party. He is also a prominent member of the opposition coalition that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general election.
The party did not disclose the specific infractions that led to El-Rufai’s expulsion, but the move underscores growing tensions within opposition ranks ahead of the next electoral cycle.
