‘Political Cowardice’ – ADC Blasts Speaker Abbas Over Withdrawal of Debt Remark

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, for retracting his earlier statement on Nigeria’s rising debt profile.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the National Assembly of complicity in the worsening debt crisis under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Pinnacle Daily recalls that Speaker Abbas had initially warned that Nigeria’s debt had exceeded the country’s legal threshold, describing it as a major threat to fiscal sustainability.

He later withdrew the remark.

Reacting, the ADC described Abbas’s first statement that Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio had crossed the statutory limit and now stands at 52 per cent as a rare moment of truth.

The party, however, said his subsequent withdrawal amounted to “political cowardice” and evidence of legislative compromise.

“Like a flame in the wind, the speaker’s statement offered a momentary flicker of the truth, only to be quickly doused by political expediency. Rather than standing by his remarks and on the side of the people, he chose to play safe and be politically correct,” the ADC said.
