The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has denied reports claiming it asked Mr Peter Obi to step down from the 2027 presidential race.
The group also dismissed allegations that it warned northern leaders against supporting the former Anambra State governor.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze described the reports as false and misleading.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been alerted to a misleading report circulating on social media, alleging that the apex Igbo body warned Mr Peter Obi against contesting the 2027 presidential election,” the statement read.
“It also claimed that Ohanaeze cautioned the North against backing his candidacy. We wish to categorically state that such a mischief-driven and misleading statement did not come from Ohanaeze.”
Dr Chukwu blamed the misinformation on what he described as a group of impostors using the organisation’s name for political purposes. He said the group operates under a fake identity and does not represent Ohanaeze.

He stressed that the current leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Senator John Azuta Mbata as President-General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi as Deputy President-General, and Emeka Sibeudu as Secretary-General, remains focused on promoting unity, fairness, and justice.
Ndigbo Committed to Wellbeing of Igbo Nation
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo is committed to the wellbeing of the Igbo nation and to national development through justice, fairness, and equity,” Chukwu stated.
“We remain non-partisan and have not taken any position on the 2027 presidential election or endorsed any candidate.”
The group urged the public and the media to ignore statements from individuals or groups claiming to speak on its behalf without proper authority.
“These are individuals misusing the name of Ohanaeze to serve the interests of their political sponsors. Their statements should be disregarded,” the group warned.
