President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to lead local peace-building initiatives, including blood donation drives for the injured adding that, “The value of human life is greater than that of a cow. We are here to govern, not to bury.”
The president gave the charge in a meeting with traditional rulers and top state officials on Wednesday during a condolence visit.
During the visit, President Tinubu observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, assuring the people of Benue State of the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.
The Yelewata incident is one of many violent attacks in Benue State.
Governor Alia recently confirmed that the latest wave of violence left 151 people dead.
President Bola Tinubu however, arrived at the Tactical Air Command of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi at 12:58 p.m. and proceeded directly to the Benue State University Teaching hospital where some of the injured are receiving treatment.
Tinubu Cites Weather, Road Conditions for Delay
Speaking during a condolence visit, Tinubu expressed regret over his inability to travel to Yelwata on time due to “heavy rains and poor road conditions.” He said, “We are here to help achieve peace that is vital and which will help bring more development.”
Praises Security Efforts, Orders Arrest of Perpetrators
The President commended security agencies for their efforts in protecting lives and property in the state, while urging them to intensify operations to apprehend those responsible for the attack. “I expect arrests of those criminals who have perpetrated this evil,” he said. Turning to the Chief of Defence Staff, he added, “CDS, thank you very much. I know you are not tired of staying in the bush—keep your ears to the ground and smoke them out.”
Calls for Ranching as Long-Term Solution
The President tasked the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development to partner with the state government in developing ranches as a lasting solution to the persistent clashes between farmers and herders.
Urges Unity Across Ethnic and Political Lines
In a passionate appeal, Tinubu urged the people of Benue to rise above ethnic and political divisions, calling for unity against those who exploit conflict for personal gain. “We are members of the same family in the same house but in different rooms. Whichever ethnic identity you have, we must work together to turn this nation into one of prosperity,” he said.
Plans Abuja Summit for Peace and Stability
Tinubu proposed the formation of a leadership committee that would include representatives from across political parties to meet in Abuja and draft a roadmap for sustainable peace. “Peace is so important. We cannot do anything in the absence of peace,” he said. “You can’t give us food sovereignty if you continue in conflict.”
Demands Stronger Intelligence Response
The President concluded by urging national intelligence agencies—including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)—to improve intelligence gathering in order to forestall further attacks and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Speaking during the President’s condolence visit, Governor Alia described the attacks as calculated attempts to displace communities from their ancestral lands.
“These attacks on the peace-loving people of Benue are not just random acts of violence—they are targeted efforts aimed at alienating us from our ancestral lands,” he said.
He expressed renewed hope for peace in Benue State and pledged, “We will keep working to ensure that our people are not only safe but also return to their ancestral land.”
President Tinubu’s Visit Receives Massive Support
President Tinubu’s condolence visit received massive support by Top government officials including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and the host Governor, Hyacinth Alia.
They were joined by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, other federal lawmakers from Benue State and the governors of states in the North Central zone, ministers and government appointees.
