U.S. Orders Citizens to Leave Mali as Jihadi Blockade Deepens Fuel, Security Crisis

The United States Embassy in Mali has told all American citizens to leave the country immediately. The warning follows growing terror threats and a crippling fuel crisis caused by a jihadi blockade.

In a statement, the embassy urged Americans to take commercial flights out of Mali. It said travel by road is unsafe due to repeated attacks along major highways.

This is the second alert in less than a week. Earlier, the embassy warned of rising crime, terrorism, and kidnappings across the country.

The crisis began when Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaida-linked group, blocked fuel trucks from entering Mali in September.

The militants have since burned more than 100 trucks, cutting off the nation’s fuel supply and paralyzing transport.

The shortage has forced schools and universities to close. Public movement has nearly stopped as fuel becomes scarce.

JNIM is among several armed groups spreading violence across the Sahel, a vast region from North Africa to West Africa.

The growing insurgency has deepened the humanitarian crisis and threatens regional stability.
