Memorial Day is a federal holiday honouring U.S. military personnel who died in service, observed annually on the last Monday in May.
It is a time for visiting cemeteries and memorials to mourn the military personnel who died in the line of duty.
The event dates back to the aftermath of the American Civil War. It started as Decoration Day after the Civil War, around 1868. People decorated the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers with flowers. After World War I, it expanded to honour all Americans who died in any war.
It became a federal holiday in 1971 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
Volunteers will place American flags on the graves of those military personnel in national cemeteries.
