Resign as Minister, Face Rivers Politics Obsession, APC Secretary Tells Wike

FCTA to Begin Enforcement on Ground Rent, Land Use Fees, Property Registration November 26

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to resign his appointment and focus on what he described as his “obsession with Rivers State politics.”

Basiru made the call in a statement issued on Monday, insisting that Wike has no locus to comment on or interfere in the internal affairs of the APC, having not formally joined the party.

He said Wike’s public comments on APC matters were inappropriate and unwarranted, stressing that party affairs should be handled strictly by registered members.

APC National Secretary Rejects Interference

The APC scribe stated that his responsibilities as National Secretary were not limited to any state, contrary to claims allegedly made by Wike.

“I am the National Secretary of the APC, and my activities are not confined to Osun State or any particular part of the country,” Basiru said.

He added that Wike had no authority to comment on his political engagements within or outside Rivers State, insisting that such comments amounted to unnecessary interference.

Allegation of Interest in Rivers Funds Dismissed

Basiru also dismissed claims that he was interested in the reported N600 billion in the coffers of the Rivers State Government, describing the allegation as false and misleading.

According to him, his record in public service reflects integrity, discipline and commitment, noting that he has never acted as an opportunist.

“My records of service are those of integrity and commitment. I have always taken principled positions, no matter whose interest is affected,” he said.

Responding to what he described as veiled threats, Basiru said he could not be intimidated by anyone, regardless of status or position.

He recalled his role in the struggle against military dictatorship, stressing that such experiences had strengthened his resolve to stand by his convictions.

“I cannot be bullied by anybody, no matter how highly placed. Only God determines what happens to anyone,” he added.

Basiru concluded by advising Wike to resign as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and devote his attention fully to Rivers State politics, rather than meddling in the affairs of the APC.
