PDP Petitions IGP Over Injured Workers, Alleged Violent Invasion of Secretariat

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), demanding a full investigation into what it described as a violent invasion of its National Secretariat in Abuja by suspended officials and their supporters.

In a petition signed by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, the PDP alleged that the incident, which occurred on Monday, November 3, 2025, left several staff members injured and disrupted official activities at the secretariat.

Suspended officials accused

According to the petition, the suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, allegedly led the attack alongside a group of thugs.

The party claimed the group broke into offices, assaulted staff, and fired tear gas within the premises.

“The thugs broke into offices, unleashed violence, attacked staff, fired tear gas, wounded our staff, assaulted journalists, and disrupted activities in our National Secretariat,” the petition read.

The PDP further alleged that the action was carried out with the support of some security operatives and questioned the role of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command in the matter.

Staff injured, operations disrupted

The petition stated that one female staff member fainted after inhaling tear gas and was later revived, while three others, identified as Mr. Terna Tergba, Mrs. Cecilia Ukwayi, and Mr. Innocent Ezekiel  sustained injuries and were receiving medical attention.

It added that the invaders made attempts to install one of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) members as Acting National Chairman, describing the move as “a dangerous precedent for internal democracy.”

The party urged the IGP to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deployment of police personnel to the secretariat without the knowledge of the National Chairman.

“The Inspector General may please note that our country is currently under the scope of the international community, and this unwarranted assault on the opposition party and its staff, which is a clear threat to democracy in Nigeria, further aggravates a very tense situation,” the petition read in part.

The PDP appealed to the police to ensure accountability and protect the rights of political institutions nationwide. It also attached photographs and video evidence to aid the investigation.
