The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed as “false and irresponsible” a statement attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, which alleged that the group and its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, were responsible for over 30,000 deaths in the South East.
In a statement issued by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group said the claim misrepresents its activities and motives.
Titled “IPOB Did Not Cause Insecurity and Mortality in the South East,” the statement reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to a non-violent approach.
IPOB argued that insecurity in the region stems from broader political and security issues, not its actions.

It noted that both its members and its leader have long been targets of arrests and security operations and reiterated calls for an independent investigation into violence in the South East since 2015.
The group also criticised Senator Kalu for allegedly mischaracterising its role, urging him to provide evidence to substantiate his claims.
IPOB Claims Political Interference In Leader’s Case
IPOB insisted it bears no responsibility for deaths or destruction recorded in the region, stressing that its agitation has always remained within lawful boundaries.
The statement further accused unnamed political actors of using allegations against IPOB to advance personal political interests, warning that such claims risk inflaming tensions.
IPOB called for due process in ongoing legal matters involving Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and claimed political interference has affected the handling of his case.
The public was urged to disregard unverified claims linking the group to widespread violence.
Senator Kalu had not issued any further comment at the time of this report. IPOB concluded by reiterating that its focus remains on advocacy and that all accusations should be independently scrutinised.
