FG under Fire as ADC Threatens to Join Contractors Protest Over Unpaid Debts, Pension Arrears

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned that it will join ongoing demonstrations by indigenous contractors and pensioners if the federal government fails to settle longstanding debts and entitlements.

In a statement on Sunday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesperson, accused the federal government of showing “insensitivity” toward thousands of contractors and retirees owed billions of naira.

Members of the Association of Indigenous Contractors of Nigeria (AICON) have held several protests at the Ministry of Finance, displaying symbolic coffins as they demand the payment of more than N500 billion in verified debts for completed federal projects.

Pensioners from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and other agencies have also scheduled a nationwide “naked protest” for Monday, December 8, over the government’s failure to implement the approved minimum pension and monthly palliatives since 2023.

Abdullahi criticised what he described as the government’s “double standards”, noting that officials continue to boast of surpassing revenue targets while legitimate contractors remain unpaid.

“You cannot claim revenue excellence while ordinary Nigerians are drowning in unpaid debts. Something is not adding up,” he said.

He also accused the administration of diverting attention to early political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, citing reports of campaign vehicle procurement and coordinator recruitment.

“A government that cannot pay its own contractors and cannot honour its obligations to pensioners has absolutely no moral right to be campaigning for another term,” Abdullahi stated.

He added that the ADC is prepared to take to the streets in solidarity with the affected groups if the government does not act immediately.
