FCT Teachers Join Indefinite Strike as NUT Directs Shutdown of Schools

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Wing, has directed all primary and secondary school teachers to join the ongoing indefinite strike.

The union said it acted on the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which instructed all affiliate unions in the FCT to escalate the industrial action.

NUT said the move became necessary to ensure a united front, despite earlier reservations about the strike’s organisation.

“All teachers in FCT primary and secondary schools must stay away from classrooms from Monday,” the union said.

It also asked teachers in the city centre and nearby areas to gather at the National Industrial Court in Area 11, Abuja, by 7:00 a.m. in solidarity with the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

Union Reaffirms Commitment

The union pledged to continue talks with authorities until they resolve all outstanding welfare issues affecting teachers.

It urged members to remain resolute, promising to provide updates as events unfold.

Workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) began an indefinite strike on January 19 over unresolved welfare concerns.

JUAC members continue to call for urgent government action to address issues affecting workers’ morale and productivity.
