The Federal Capital Territory has rolled out plans for an inclusive, community-focused commemoration of the 2025 World AIDS Day.
The Health Services and Environment Secretariat confirmed the activities on Thursday through its media aide, Bola Ajao.
The Secretariat will host a one-day high-level symposium on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, in Abuja, starting at 10 a.m.

According to the Director of Public Health, Dr. Dan Gadzama, the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, directed the event to strengthen awareness and deepen public engagement.
He explained that the programme aligns with this year’s theme: “Overcoming Disruption: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response.”
The symposium will gather policymakers, health workers, partners, and community members. They will review progress, share experiences, and agree on practical ways to improve the HIV response in the FCT.
Gadzama said the goal is simple: “We want everyone to speak with one voice and support those affected.”
The State Programme Coordinator for HIV/AIDS, STIs and Viral Hepatitis, Dr. Fatima Daggash, stressed the importance of the day.
She noted that December 1 gives countries a moment to honour people lost to AIDS, celebrate progress, and renew their commitment to ending the disease.
“Bringing all stakeholders together helps us discuss the realities honestly and decide what needs urgent improvement,” she said.
As part of this year’s activities, the Secretariat will offer free HIV testing and counselling across selected communities. It will also run sensitization drives to encourage early detection, improve linkage to care, sustain viral suppression, and reduce stigma.

Daggash added that these activities aim to ensure that more residents gain access to accurate information and life-saving services.
The FCT authorities say they are determined to keep the HIV response active, inclusive, and community-driven as the fight against the epidemic continues.
