Nigeria has historically faced significant lapses in population data collection, including underreporting, poor record-keeping, and inconsistent methodologies.
These gaps have hindered effective decision-making and skewed national statistics, affecting planning for housing, education, healthcare, and employment.
As Dr. Aminu Yusuf officially assumes office as Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), following his swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025, all eyes are on him to tell a different story and fulfil his promise.
Yusuf succeeds Nasir Isa Kwarra, who served as NPC chairman since 2020. The ceremony, part of the first segment of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, was attended by cabinet members.
Dr. Yusuf’s appointment was confirmed by the Senate on October 21, 2025, after being nominated by President Tinubu on October 9, 2025. He was sworn in alongside two other NPC members, including Tonga Betara from Yobe State.
Commitment to Data and Transparency
Upon taking office, Dr. Yusuf pledged to transform the NPC into a leading data institution, emphasizing the importance of accurate population and demographic data for national planning.

What to Expect Under Dr. Yusuf’s Leadership
Dr. Yusuf aims to modernise the NPC by leveraging technology in data collection and analysis.
Citizens can expect improvements in civil registration services, enhanced infrastructure for census operations, and increased engagement with local and international stakeholders, as he has stressed that accurate data would inform policy decisions, support sustainable development, and guide resource allocation across all sectors of government.
The NPC under Dr. Yusuf is expected to prioritise institutional development, strengthen its workforce, and improve the quality and reliability of demographic data.
This approach is intended to position Nigeria as a model in population management and data-driven governance.
