Former Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, has announced his intention to contest the Benue North-East senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Suswam made this known on Monday during an interview on Arise TV.
The former governor had earlier defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in February, a move the PDP said only formalised his long-standing exit from the party.
Speaking on his decision, Suswam described it as a political realignment based on conviction.
He said Benue politics has historically revolved around a dominant party, noting that the state was under the PDP for 16 years before shifting to the APC.
According to him, his decision reflects the preference of the people of the state.
“Benue has always aligned with one major party. It was PDP for years before the shift to APC. As a Benue indigene, I cannot go against the direction my people have taken,” he said.
On his 2027 ambition, Suswam said he remains active in politics and is eligible to contest.
“As a politician, if you are still strong, you will continue to seek elective office. The only position open to me now is the Senate,” he said.
He added that he cannot contest the governorship again due to constitutional limits.
