A member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, on Tuesday called for the suspension of parliamentary activities in response to the worsening insecurity across the country.
Doguwa, who represents the Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency, made the remarks during plenary, criticising the handling of security challenges by the President Bola Tinubu administration.
‘Country Running in Blood and Tears’
The lawmaker said insecurity had disrupted basic activities in many communities, leaving citizens unable to carry out daily tasks.
“The country is running in blood and tears. Farmers cannot go to the farm. Traders cannot go to the market. Worshippers cannot go to mosques or churches. Then what are you legislating here?” he asked.
He said fear and violence had overtaken normal life, affecting livelihoods and weakening public confidence.
Calls for Legislative Shutdown
Addressing the Speaker and his colleagues, Doguwa argued that the House must send a strong message to the executive by halting proceedings until decisive action is taken.
“If the government is not prepared to do the right thing to protect lives and property, I urge this honourable House to stand up to pay the supreme cost,” he said.

Warning on National Stability
Doguwa reminded members that the constitution places security squarely on the federal government, while also holding states responsible.
He said the crisis was affecting every constituency, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.
He warned that continued insecurity could disrupt national processes, including future elections, and urged lawmakers to strengthen their oversight functions.
Kidnappings Surge in Constituency
The lawmaker highlighted the rising incidents of kidnapping in his constituency, particularly around the Falgore Game Reserve. He said the frequency of attacks had become a daily concern for residents.
Doguwa urged members to work together across regional and party lines, stressing that cooperation was necessary to address the escalating threats.
He said only a united approach would reassure citizens and compel the government to take urgent and effective steps to restore security nationwide.
