Court Rejects Lamido’s Request to Halt PDP National Convention

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday declined to grant the request of former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, seeking to stop the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned national convention.

Lamido, through his counsel, Jeph Njikonye (SAN), had approached the court with an ex parte motion asking for an interim order restraining the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with the exercise pending the hearing of a motion on notice.

In his ruling, Justice Peter Lifu directed the PDP and INEC to appear before the court and show cause why Lamido’s prayers should not be granted.

According to court filings, the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2299/2025 lists Lamido as the plaintiff, while the PDP and INEC are the 1st and 2nd defendants respectively.

The case will determine whether the opposition party can proceed with its national convention despite objections from some members, including the former governor.

The former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, had earlier threatened to drag the party to court after he was allegedly denied access to purchase the nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman.

Lamido, who arrived at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on Monday morning, was reportedly stopped from obtaining the form, a development he described as “unacceptable and undemocratic.”

Speaking with journalists after the incident, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed disappointment over what he called an attempt to sideline him from the forthcoming National Convention scheduled to hold on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
