Court Adjourns Trial of Anthony Joshua’s Driver to February 25

A magistrate court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Tuesday adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus sports utility vehicle involved in the accident that claimed the lives of two associates of  Anthony Joshua, a British professional boxer and former two-time unified world heavyweight champion.

Kayode appeared before the court for the continuation of his trial following a four-count charge filed against him by the Ogun State Police Command on January 2.

The charges border on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

Earlier, the presiding magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, had granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties.

Kayode was remanded in a correctional facility pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to February 25, 2026.

Proceedings in Court

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that three out of the four prosecution witnesses were present.

He said the witnesses were officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, also known as the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).

Nigiwe, however, applied for an adjournment of the case to March to enable the prosecution duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney-General, through the Department of Public Prosecution, for legal advice.

The defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, opposed the application, arguing that since three prosecution witnesses were already in court, the trial should proceed.

In her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the case to February 25 to allow the prosecutor seek legal advice. She also ordered that the case file be duplicated and transmitted to the state attorney-general.

Background

The incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when a vehicle conveying Joshua and two of his close associates crashed into a stationary truck around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State.

Joshua and three other passengers were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the SUV collided with the truck.

While the former world heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries and survived the crash, two of his close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami  died.

Ghami was Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Latif served as his personal trainer.

Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, on December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment for his injuries.

Following the crash, the boxer posted a tribute to Ghami and Ayodele on Instagram, writing: “I didn’t even realise how special they are.

“I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men.

“100% it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents.”
