Convention: PDP Governors Close Ranks, Promise Fair Contest in Ibadan

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have pledged to ensure unity, transparency, and credible internal elections ahead of the party’s National Convention scheduled to hold on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The commitment was made in Abuja during a meeting of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) Protocol Sub-Committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, and co-chaired by Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.

The meeting formed part of preparations for the Ibadan convention where 19 new members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) are expected to be elected.

Fintiri: “We will not let the party down”

Governor Fintiri assured that the committee was determined to conduct a transparent and credible exercise that reflects the principles of internal democracy within the PDP.

“We are fully committed and will not leave any stone unturned. We are putting in our best and making sacrifices to ensure a successful convention. Not under our leadership will we let this party down,” Fintiri said.

He disclosed that all aspirants who had purchased nomination forms would undergo thorough screening and be given equal opportunities to contest, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

“Everybody who has purchased forms for screening, once they have no encumbrances in their documents or past lifestyle, will be screened. Go and test your popularity in the field because we are already finalising the names of the delegates,” he explained.

Convention Process Would Be Transparent

The governor added that the delegates’ list would be made public, stressing that the convention process would be open and transparent.

“It is not as if we are running a closed system; it’s open. Those who are most popular, those supported by the majority, will emerge victorious,” he said.

Fintiri urged members to remain disciplined and united as the party moves closer to the convention. “Make sacrifices and don’t mind any noise that you hear. We will be victorious at the end of it,” he added.

Mutfwang: Convention a test of PDP’s strength

In his remarks, Plateau State Governor and Co-Chairman of the Protocol Sub-Committee, Caleb Mutfwang, described the convention as a test of the PDP’s organisational strength and readiness to reposition itself for national leadership.

“Yesterday’s meeting demonstrates that the PDP is taking the convention seriously. Those who started the PDP will not wish that it should die in our time. We, therefore, have a responsibility to keep the platform functional for Nigerians,” Mutfwang said.

He emphasised the importance of coordination among committee members to ensure smooth logistics and protocol arrangements.

“Our job is cut out for us. The essence of this inaugural meeting is for us to know ourselves, because our job is not in Abuja. Our job is in Ibadan at the appropriate time,” he stated.

The upcoming convention, expected to produce new national officers, is seen as a crucial step in the party’s ongoing reorganisation efforts as it prepares to challenge for power in the 2027 general elections.
