Congolese Forces Retake Uvira as M23 Rebels Withdraw

The Congolese army has regained control of Uvira, a key city in South Kivu, following the withdrawal of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels.

M23 had captured Uvira in early December but announced on Thursday that it would place the city under the oversight of the international community. Despite the announcement, residents reported that rebel police and military personnel remained in the city until recently.

On Sunday, pro-Kinshasa Wazalendo forces moved into Uvira’s southern districts, followed later by Congolese special forces. By Monday, government sources confirmed that the city was fully recaptured.

Residents welcomed the returning troops with cheers, though sporadic gunfire was reported, and local sources noted incidents of looting in shops and homes during the transition.

South Kivu officials warned that M23 fighters have taken positions in the surrounding hills, keeping the city under threat despite their withdrawal from the area. The move comes amid reports that the rebels’ pullback followed a request from the United States.

The recapture of Uvira marks a significant step in the Congolese government’s effort to regain stability in the region and curb the influence of armed groups in South Kivu.
