APGA EXPLAINS Absence of Presidential Candidate on INEC Portal

APGA NEW

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has explained why it has not submitted the name of a presidential candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general election, saying the decision is tied to its endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

The National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, said the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved, after consultations, not to nominate a presidential candidate and instead support Tinubu’s re-election.

According to him, the decision was reached in what the party considers the national interest.

“We have not uploaded a presidential candidate because the National Executive Committee of the party has already taken a decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027,” Opara said in an interview with Vanguard.

He, however, stressed that APGA remains fully involved in the electoral process, revealing that the party has submitted the names of all its candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly elections through the INEC nomination portal.

“I can confirm that APGA has successfully uploaded all its candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly elections to the INEC portal,” he added.

Decision Based on Tinubu’s Endorsement

Opara said the absence of a presidential candidate should not be interpreted as a failure to comply with INEC’s requirements but as a deliberate political decision arising from the party’s endorsement of Tinubu.

He maintained that APGA’s support for the president at the presidential level would not affect its participation in legislative elections across the country.

According to him, the party is focused on expanding its representation in the National Assembly and state legislatures.

Focus on Legislative Elections

The APGA spokesman said the party remains committed to strengthening democracy by presenting credible candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly.

He added that all required documents for the party’s legislative candidates were submitted to INEC within the prescribed deadline.

Opara also urged party members and supporters to remain united and mobilise support for APGA’s candidates in the legislative elections while backing Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The clarification follows public interest over why APGA’s presidential candidate was missing from the INEC nomination portal after the party publicly endorsed President Tinubu for another term.
