FG Revamps 2,000 PHCs, Boosts Access to Essential Healthcare Nationwide

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to improve Nigeria’s primary healthcare system. The goal is to give more citizens access to quality and affordable health care.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Muyi Aina, made this known during the agency’s quarterly media briefing in Abuja. He praised Bola Ahmed Tinubu for putting healthcare at the centre of national planning.

Dr. Aina said the government plans to make 17,600 Primary Healthcare Centres fully functional across the country. Each political ward will have at least one standard facility.

So far, the government has revitalised 2,125 PHCs in partnership with state governments. It is also restoring 1,671 other centres across the country.

The government expanded the Basic Health Care Provision Fund to cover over 5,000 more facilities.

To reduce the impact of inflation, low-volume PHCs will now receive ₦600,000 every quarter. High-volume centres will receive ₦800,000.

Dr. Aina said the government has approved funds for 31 states that are ready.

The “Identify, Enumerate and Vaccinate” strategy has recorded 7.4 million children nationwide. Health workers have already vaccinated more than 3.4 million children.

Dr. Aina thanked President Tinubu for approving ₦68 billion for vaccine co-financing with Gavi. He said the funding helped Nigeria avoid a nationwide vaccine shortage.

The agency has deployed new digital tools to improve healthcare services. These include a national PHC dashboard and online training platforms for health workers.

These tools help monitor performance and improve accountability.

Visits to primary healthcare centres have increased from 39 million to 47 million every quarter. Dr. Aina said this shows growing public trust in the system.

Members of the NPHCDA management team urged the media to continue reporting on both challenges and progress in the health sector.
