Don Richard Seeks Help Amid Kidney Battle

By Esther Ososanya

Veteran Nollywood actor Don Richard has made a heartfelt plea to the public for financial assistance as he battles kidney disease, revealing that the cost of treatment has wiped out all his family’s savings and property.

In a video shared Tuesday evening by actress Biola Bayo, the ailing actor recounted the toll his illness has taken not only on his health but also on his wife and children.

“When my wife was told about my health, she started crying. I told her another man is a lucky man. I begged her to take care of our twins,” Richard said emotionally.

He added that his wife had sold their house and car to fund his medical care. “I have nothing left anymore,” he said, visibly drained but composed.

An Industry Icon in Distress

Don Richard, known for his commanding roles in Nollywood epics and television dramas, has long been a respected figure in Nigeria’s film industry.

His current health challenge  has spotlighted the financial vulnerability of many ageing actors in the absence of structured health insurance or pension schemes.

Biola Bayo, who posted his appeal online, shared his account details and urged fans and colleagues to support him financially during this critical time.

“Don Richard has been down with a kidney for a while,” she wrote, noting that he urgently needs public support.

Don Richard’s case echoes growing concerns within Nollywood and the wider Nigerian creative sector, where serious medical conditions often push actors into public crowdfunding due to a lack of systemic welfare or health coverage.

As the veteran actor fights for his life, supporters across the industry are rallying to amplify his voice not only to save him but to underscore the urgent need for an actors’ health fund in Nigeria.
