New Service Chiefs Take Command, Pledge Tougher Offensive Against Terrorism

Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs formally assumed office in Abuja on Thursday, pledging renewed determination to tackle terrorism, banditry, and other security threats confronting the nation.

Their assumption of duty follows unanimous confirmation by the National Assembly on Wednesday. Those now taking charge include:

  • Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede — Chief of Defence Staff (CDS)
  • Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu — Chief of Army Staff (COAS)
  • Rear Admiral Idi Abbas—Chief of Naval Staff (CNS)
  • Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke — Chief of Air Staff (CAS)

Speaking during the handover at Defence Headquarters, the new CDS, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede, assured Nigerians that his leadership will prioritise accountability, discipline, welfare, loyalty, and professionalism, stressing that operations against insurgents, bandits, and other criminal elements will be intensified across the country.

In his farewell remarks, outgoing CDS Gen. Christopher Musa urged officers and personnel to extend full cooperation to his successor and remain steadfast in defending national security interests.
