UK Set to Ease Business Rates Hike for Pubs Amid Closure Fears

Britain is preparing measures to soften the impact of a planned business rates increase on pubs, following warnings from hospitality groups that the tax hike could force closures.

Pubs, long central to communities across the UK, sought relief after Finance Minister Rachel Reeves announced changes to business rates—a property tax on commercial premises during her November budget.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) warned that 15,000 jobs could be at risk, with around 5,000 smaller pubs facing a business rates bill for the first time. The group has been working with the government to address the inflated “rateable value” that drives higher bills.

According to the BBC, the government will scale back the planned rate rises as part of a broader support package for the sector. A Treasury spokesperson said details of measures covering business rates, licensing, and deregulation will be announced in the coming days.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration has recently retreated on several policies, including cuts to farmers’ taxes, welfare reductions, and energy subsidy adjustments for older people, signaling a willingness to respond to public and industry concerns.
