The leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took another twist on Wednesday as Nafiu Bala, Deputy National Chairman of the party, announced his assumption of office as National Chairman.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Bala insisted he is the authentic leader of the ADC, citing both the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
He explained that his emergence followed the resignation of Ralph Nwosu, who stepped down after the opposition coalition adopted the ADC a few months ago.
Upon Nwosu’s exit, former Senate President David Mark was named Interim National Chairman, but Bala rejected the arrangement, accusing coalition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of attempting to hijack the party.

“As our party’s national leadership, we are not aware of any change of leadership,” Bala declared.
He said, “Our former National Chairman voluntarily resigned his position. The constitution of our party is very clear on the transfer of power when such a vacancy occurs. As far as we are concerned, the Electoral Act and our constitution empower the Deputy National Chairman to take over the leadership of the party.
“I now resume office as the authentic National Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress.”
Bala’s declaration is expected to intensify the internal wrangling within the ADC as rival factions continue to lay claim to the party’s leadership structure.
