DRC Begins 42-Day Countdown to Declare Ebola Outbreak Over

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached a major milestone in its fight against Ebola, as the last patient in the recent outbreak has fully recovered and been discharged from hospital.

Health authorities say the recovery marks the start of a 42-day countdown twice the virus’s incubation period before the outbreak can officially be declared over if no new cases are detected.

The outbreak, declared in early September in Bulape health district of Kasai Province, has recorded 53 confirmed and 11 suspected infections, with 19 people recovering from the disease. No new cases have been reported since September 25.

Despite the area’s difficult terrain and limited infrastructure, the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) swiftly established a 32-bed treatment centre and vaccinated more than 35,000 people in Bulape against the Ebola virus.

WHO and its partners remain on the ground, supporting local health teams to maintain vigilance and ensure rapid response to any potential resurgence.

If the country continues to record no new cases, the Ebola outbreak will be officially declared over in early December 2025.
