AU Condemns Attempted Military Coup in Benin

African Union

The African Union Commission (AUC) has strongly condemned the attempted military coup in the Republic of Benin on Sunday, describing it as a serious violation of the organisation’s principles.

In a statement issued on December 7, the AUC Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Yousouf, said the Union rejects any form of military involvement in political processes, stressing that such actions undermine democracy and stability on the continent.

Yousouf cited key AU instruments, including the Constitutive Act, the Lomé Declaration, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, and the Ezulwini Framework, which clearly prohibit unconstitutional changes of government.

He urged those behind the failed coup attempt to immediately stop all illegal activities and return to their barracks, while calling on national actors to prioritise unity and peaceful dialogue.

The Chairperson expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of coups and attempted coups in parts of the region.

He warned that these actions weaken state institutions, erode public trust, and threaten collective security.

Yousouf reaffirmed the AU’s support for President Patrice Talon and the legitimate authorities in Benin, commending citizens for their continued commitment to peace and democratic governance.

He added that the Union, working with regional and international partners, is ready to assist Benin in restoring full constitutional order and strengthening democratic institutions.
