The newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass, has pledged to tighten maritime security, enhance operational efficiency, and uphold the Nigerian Navy’s core values of integrity, professionalism, and teamwork.
Speaking in Abuja, Abass expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, promising to serve with dedication, fairness, and loyalty.
“It is with honour and humility that I accept this responsibility. I am aware of the task ahead and I pledge to uphold excellence and service that define our Navy,” he said.
He praised his predecessors for their contributions, particularly Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, whom he described as a visionary leader who strengthened the Navy’s operational framework.

Abass identified major security challenges within Nigeria’s maritime domain, including crude oil theft, sea robbery, illegal bunkering, unregulated fishing, and drug trafficking, warning that these crimes threaten national security and economic stability.
Outlining his strategic plan, he highlighted fleet renewal, adoption of advanced technology, intensive training, and improved personnel welfare as key priorities. He also emphasized collaboration with other security agencies and international partners to ensure safer waters.
“The Navy under my watch will be professional and accountable. We are committed to safeguarding our maritime environment for national prosperity and the protection of legitimate trade,” he assured.
