Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc (Eko DisCo) has registered a subsidiary, Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited, to taker over the operations of its electricity distribution business in Lagos State.

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the management of Eko DisCo clarified that the creation of the subsidiary was in compliance with regulatory requirements for electricity distribution set by the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).

Pinnacle Daily reports that LASERC recently granted electricity distribution licences to Excel Distribution Company Limited and IE Energy Lagos Limited to take over the distribution operations previously managed by Eko Electricity Distribution Plc and Ikeja Electric Plc, respectively.

Eko DisCo explained that restructuring is in line with the Electricity Act 2021, which devolved regulatory oversight of the electricity market to state governments, consequently leading to the creation of LASERC.

Eko DisCo, which operates in Lagos and Ogun States, said LASERC regulations required it to set up a subsidiary to over see its Lagos operations, hence the creation of Excel Electricity Distribution Company Limited.

“The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) required Eko DisCo, which operates in two states (Lagos and Ogun States) to register a separate entity for its Lagos State operations. EKEDP therefore registered its subsidiary, Excel Electricity Distribution Limited to operate its distribution business under the regulatory oversight of LASERC and NERC (Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission),” it stated.

The statement further clarified that Eko DisCo has not been sold or taken over, stressing that Eko DisCo remains a legal entity owned by West Power and Gas and BPE representing the Federal Government.

“We would kindly like to highlight that Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc has not been sold or taken over. EKEDC remains a legally recognised and operational entity duly incorporated under Nigerian law. There has been no sale, transfer of ownership, or dissolution of the company.”

While West Power and Gas holds 60 per cent stake, BPE holds the remaining 40 per cent on behalf of the Federal Government.

The statement emphasised that the newly licensed Excel Electricity Distribution Limited is a 100 per cent subsidiary of EKEDP and will perform all the electricity distribution activities previously done under Eko DisCo.

It urged all customers to pay their electricity bills in the same way they have been paying, stressing that while they will notice the name change from Eko DisCo to Excel Disco, they will continue to be served by the same personnel.

It also disclosed that following the transition, Eko Electricity Distribution Comnpany Plc has transformed into a holding company. “This structural change carried out in regulatory compliance would in no way impair our operations in Lagos State,” the management assured.

“Management hereby reiterates that Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc remains a key player and investor in the Lagos electricity ecosystem, committed to delivering reliable, efficient, and sustainable power supply to all customers through Excel Disco. The recent licensing developments represent a regulatory and structural transition, not a takeover or divestment.”
