APC Wins Zamfara Supplementary Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Kamilu Sa’idu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the supplementary election for Kaura-Namoda South State Constituency in Zamfara State.

The returning officer, Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau, announced that Sa’idu polled 1,181 votes to defeat Muhammad Lawal Kurya of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 194 votes.

Channels Television reported that the APC secured a total of 8,182 votes across the constituency, while the PDP polled 5,544 votes.

Sa’adu declared:“Kamilu Sa’idu of the APC, having scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

Why the Supplementary Election Was Held

The supplementary poll took place in Kyambarawa (three polling units) and Sakajiki (two polling units). INEC ordered the rerun after the bye-election held on August 16 was declared inconclusive.

The margin between the APC and PDP candidates at that time was 1,662 votes, which was less than the 3,265 Permanent Voter Cards collected in the affected polling units.

With INEC’s declaration, Sa’idu will now represent Kaura-Namoda South Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly.

The contest came against the backdrop of heightened political rivalry in Zamfara. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the 2023 governorship election, unseating Bello Matawalle of the APC, who now serves as Minister of Defence under President Bola Tinubu.
