Former Nigeria international Dimeji Lawal has expressed deep disappointment over the home-based Super Eagles’ disastrous 4-0 defeat to Sudan, which confirmed their early exit from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Zanzibar.
The match, played on Tuesday night at the Amman Stadium, saw Sudan net twice in each half, leaving Nigeria rooted to the bottom of Group C with no goals scored and five conceded in two matches.
This marks the second time the Eagles have crashed out at the CHAN group stage, following a similar fate at the 2016 edition in Rwanda.
Eric Chelle’s side looked out of depth from the start, struggling to create meaningful chances and crumbling under Sudan’s high pressing.
The loss extinguishes Nigeria’s hopes of progressing in the tournament, reducing their final group fixture against Congo next Tuesday to a mere formality.
Lawal Urges Fight for Pride
Speaking after the match, Lawal called on the players to salvage some dignity.
“I’m really disappointed that Nigeria will not progress beyond the group stages of this CHAN tournament. The boys can only play for pride in their next game,” he said.

The defeat has already sparked conversations about the technical preparedness of the team and the future of the home-based national squad in continental competitions.
