FG Digitises Fish Import Licensing to Boost Local Production

The Federal Government has approved the digitisation of Nigeria’s fish import licensing process. The aim is to improve transparency, strengthen oversight, and boost domestic fish production.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, directed the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture to fast-track the new digital licensing platform.

The reform supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic diversification, food security, job creation, and institutional reforms.

Dr. Oyetola said the digital licensing system will reposition Nigeria’s fisheries sector for sustainable growth and make it more competitive globally.

Benefits of the Digital Platform

“The digital system will remove administrative delays, improve transparency, and match global best practices,” the Minister said.

It will simplify procedures for genuine operators. In addition, it will reduce duplication and human errors. The platform will also provide real-time data to track imports, identify supply gaps, and guide policy decisions.

Moreover, only registered and qualified importers will receive licences. This will help stop illegal fish importation and protect local aquaculture investments.

Dr. Oyetola emphasised that the reform will help Nigeria achieve self-sufficiency in fish production. He said the goal is to reduce reliance on imports, create jobs, and support local fish farmers.

“With stronger local capacity and a well-regulated system, Nigerian fish farmers can thrive,” he added.
