FG Launches Lenacapavir Injection to Strengthen HIV Prevention in Nigeria

The Federal Government has rolled out Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection, as part of efforts to curb new infections nationwide.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mr Ali Pate, announced the rollout in Abuja on Friday, describing the drug as a major breakthrough in HIV prevention.

Lenacapavir, administered less frequently than daily oral PrEP, is expected to improve adherence and expand protection for individuals at high risk of HIV infection.

“This intervention aligns with Nigeria’s target of ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat,” Pate said, noting that it would complement existing measures such as testing, condom use, and antiretroviral therapy.

He further emphasised that the government is working to ensure nationwide access and awareness, making the injection part of a broader HIV control strategy.

Health officials say the introduction of Lenacapavir could significantly reduce new infections by offering a more convenient and long-lasting prevention option for vulnerable populations.
